Earthy pics light up city

The city centre will glow with earth-inspired projections and edgy artwork when Geelong After Dark returns on Friday.

The festival, now its fifth year, will light up City Hall, Johnstone Park and the Geelong’s parks and laneways with work by local and international artists.

Featuring in the line-up for this year’s earth-themed festival is the Terra Firma photo projection, by the Indy’s very own Rebecca Hosking.

Ms Hosking was thrilled to project nature “into the city centre” through time-lapse sequences, macro video and drone footage.

“The concept is to step off the asphalt and onto the earth,” she said.

“(Terra Firma) is an exploration of our earth, and the importance of its health and the life it hosts.”

The night includes activities at Geelong Library, Geelong Performing Arts Centre, the National Wool Museum and the city’s other cultural centres.

The Amazing Art Adventure will take kids on a journey through the city to make a bee, search for a piano and learn about the planet in an “unusual” location, promoters said.

After journeying from the You Yangs throughout the day, the Mountain to Mouth canoe will pass Johnstone Park to the sound of local choirs singing.

The canoe will travel 80km in two days before reaching its fiery demise at the mouth of the Barwon River.

Councillor Jim Mason described Geelong After Dark as the perfect opportunity to showcase and celebrate the talent of the local arts community.

“Our wonderful arts community makes an enormous contribution to the vibrancy and culture of our region,” he said.
