Grubbers land recruiting coup

Ocean Grove has pulled off a stunning recruiting coup with Gary Rohan set to wear the red and white this Bellarine Football League season.

Rohan, an Ocean Grove local, played 106 games and booted 96 goals for Sydney and wore the hoops at Geelong 98 times at AFL level for 120 goals. He played in the Cats’ 2022 premiership as well as three losing grand finals.

Now 34, Rohan still has some good footy left and will be a key leader of a young group under Dave Farrell and Nick Bourke.

The Grubbers have been keen on Rohan since he retired in 2024, but he spent last season playing for Port Fairy in the Hampden League, although he was struck down by injury and managed 10 appearances.

“The Ocean Grove local has been training with our senior side for the past 12 months and has been previously connected to our junior program,” the club said.

“It feels only natural that he now officially becomes a Grubber. Gary is an elite‑paced, versatile forward who’s keen to share his knowledge and experience with our playing group.

“We can’t wait to see him out on Steeline Ray Menzies Oval in 2026.”

Rohan is involved in Essendon’s program this season and will juggle his onfield commitments around that.

The speedster was drafted at No 6 by Sydney in 2009 and was traded to the Cats during the 2018 trade period where he would become a dangerous forward with exceptional nous and clean skills.
