Education Week: Traditional structure with innovative curriculum

NORTH Geelong Secondary College combines a traditional classroom structure and innovative curriculum combine with high expectations on academic endeavour and student behaviour.
Promoting values of respect, excellence, achievement and diversity, college features: a new state-of-the-art Language Centre; learning areas equipped with latest ICT facilities, including Apple Macintosh laptops and iPads; an extensive, well-resourced library; plentiful, well-maintained sports grounds; and a creative art and technology complex for food technology, studio art, ceramics and woodwork.
The college’s primary-to-secondary transition program creates a smooth start to year 7. A year seven camp is part of the program, helping students and staff build positive relationships in a fun learning environment.
The college’s scholarship program promotes and recognises primary students displaying strong involvement in their school communities. Scholarships are available in: leadership; community; academic excellence; sports; and arts.
The college offers a Select Entry Academic Achievers Program (SEAAP) for high-performing students who want to be challenged and who demonstrate high levels of task commitment.
The college’s unique Strive to Achieve Results (STAR) literacy and numeracy program for students in year seven to nine uses testing, data and teacher feedback to establish selected students’ individual needs and to tailor a program to develop, consolidate and nurture their skills.
The college’s Achieving Core Education (ACE) program aims to improve the numeracy and literacy development of students experiencing learning problems or delays.
More information, detailed information packs and personalised school tours are available by phoning the college on 5240 5800, emailing north.geelong.sc@edumail.vic.gov.au or visiting ngsc.vic.edu.au.
