Why? Because the City of Greater Geelong is seriously in the business of attracting, hosting and supporting events.
City of Greater Geelong general manager investment and attraction Brett Luxford says the events industry is now an identified strength for the region’s economic future to see Geelong thrive as a modern, 21st century city.
A diverse and engaging events calendar also brings significant social and cultural benefits to the region, he says.
“Events have definitely become an intrinsic part of our lifestyle and reputation.
“Eighty per cent of the community outdoor events staged in our region are free to attend, and more than 40 per cent of attendees at outdoor major events are non-local.
“We also have about 7000 volunteers support our events in Geelong each year.”
Mr Luxford says the City established Events Geelong specifically to connect people with current, relevant events information via social media, a website and print media.
“To demonstrate our community’s appetite for events, our Facebook page Events Geelong has a growing audience of 27,500-plus.
“We also add events for free onto our website calendar via eventsgeelong.com.au.
