FUNDS are still rolling in to Geelong’s newest charity, Samaritan House, according to committee chair Lawrie Miller.
Mr Miller said the level of community support for the homeless accommodation project had been gratifying.
“When people hear that more than 200 homeless women, men and children are turned away in Geelong every night they all agree that accommodation is a pressing need, particularly in this cold weather.”
Mr Miller said financial help from organisations like Quota International Geelong and Lions Club of Geelong Corio Bay had enabled the project to open its accommodation house at Moolap.
Quota president Rosemary Stewart said the organisation’s Doll, Teddy and Craft Show raised $6700 for Samaritan House this year.
“That was a record amount in the club’s 22 years and exceeded the previous best show by more than $1500,” Ms Stewart said.
Lions Club of Geelong Corio Bay presented Samaritan House with a $5000 cheque at its dinner meeting on Thursday.
A fundraising dinner for Samaritan House will feature guest speaker Father Bob Maguire.
The dinner and silent auction will be held at the Wool Exchange on Friday, August 24.
