That coveted top four spot is in reach for the Cats now after some topsy turvy results at the weekend.
Port Adelaide is looking increasingly like the weakest link, allowing Geelong in after falling disappointingly to an unheralded Richmond.
Plus Geelong recovered a bit of percentage, not enough to keep pace with the other top four side, but it will help maintain the gap from the chasing pack.
It was a scrappy first quarter against Melbourne, with the Demons happy to have only conceded three goals. The third quarter ditto.
The second quarter saw Geelong slip into gear with Melbourne haplessly watching on with a few unusual suspects on the Cats list getting among the goals.
A 10 goal lead near half time put paid to the game as a contest with the only interest in seeing how far Geelong.
Cam Guthrie received a chop out from coach Chris Scott by donning the red ‘rest’ vest and no injury or tribunal threats meant Geelong escaped unharmed.
On to the GWS Giants to see if Geelong can score its first interstate win for the season.
