Woman near death, baby trapped in horrific smash

Jessica Benton
A YOUNG woman was left fighting for her life as a baby lay trapped in their car after it collided with a truck near Geelong on Wednesday afternoon.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said the truck and car crashed about 2.30pm at the intersection of Evans Road and Valleyside Drive at Moorabool, north of Geelong.
The spokesperson said the male driver of the truck was heading south along Evans Road when his vehicle collided with the driver’s side of the car.
The female was driving the car and the baby was in a back seat.
The police spokesperson said a helicopter air-lifted the critically-injured woman, aged in her 30s, to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital.
The woman’s injuries were life threatening, the spokesperson said.
An ambulance took the baby, believed to be about 12 months old, to Geelong Hospital for a check-up.
The spokesperson said the truck driver, from Tarneit, was helping police with their investigations when the Independent went to press.
Police, fire and emergency services attended the crash scene, the spokesperson said.
