City of Greater Geelong councillor Bruce Harwood has been appointed as the new AFL Barwon regional manager.
A former mayor, Harwood has had a long association with football and netball in the region as a player, supporter and administrator.
AFL Barwon chairman Craig Keating said Harwood’s appointment was a boon for community sport in the region.
“I am really pleased with this appointment. We have completed a very thorough process and had a number of excellent applicants,” Keating said.
“Bruce brings a wealth of experience in business and community engagement to AFL Barwon and his energy and passion for the region will enhance the development of our community sports of football and netball as we move out of the COVID-impacted years of 2020 and 2021.”
Keating also acknowledged the work of Georgia Hillman and Sean Atkinson, who led AFL Barwon as acting regional general managers following the departure of Will McGregor in late 2020.
“Both Georgia and Sean deserve great credit for navigating the challenges of 2021 and can be proud of their work,” he said.
“The whole AFL Barwon team has performed brilliantly under difficult circumstances.”
Harwood takes over the role this week.
