For the past 10 years, AGB Training (AGB) has been educating students within Geelong and surrounding areas to make a difference within the community.
AGB Community Services student Alice chose this course because of her personal experiences.
“Growing up my mum was an alcoholic and suffered from mental illnesses.
“I then left home early and was involved in a bad relationship which was also affected by drugs and family violence.
“I just want to give back and help others going through the same things, because it’s a really hard time.”
Denis O’Brien, AGB’s Community Services Training Consultant, has more than 20 years’ experience working in the mental health and drug and alcohol field and said he finds teaching community service courses very rewarding.
“It’s really rewarding to provide students with this knowledge and to help them feel confident about working in the field of community services.
“It also assists them to overcome the misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health and drug and alcohol issues, which is really important.
“AGB’s Community Services courses are fantastic,” he said.
“You get to know yourself better and understand others better. It’s also a very broad field which can open up a lot of opportunities.
“It is definitely one of the most rewarding and expanding work forces we have.”
Denis also believes there is a need for more people within the field of Community Services and encourages people to consider a career in the industry.
