Fears for safety of children outside Corio school

Alex de Vos
A bus driver has demanded school-zone speed limits on a section of Purnell Road amid rising fears for the safety of children crossing the busy Corio thoroughfare.
Allister Kinghan, who ferries children to and from Corio West Primary School, said the 60km/h limit was an “accident waiting to happen”.
He urged authorities to reduce the limit outside the primary school to 40km/h.
“It’s pretty dangerous around there,” Mr Kinghan said.
“I see a lot of children running around and cars flying past – it’s an accident waiting to happen.
“I think it should be 40km/h like all the other school zones.”
Corio West Primary School principal Toni Wilson said she was unaware of concerns about the limit on Purnell Road but welcomed plans to improve student safety.
Ms Wilson urged concerned residents to “leave it in the hands of authorities”.
“It’s up to them to make the decisions about speed limits,” she said.
A spokesperson for MP John Eren said State Government would “liaise directly” with City Hall about the speed limit.
“The Government is committed to improving safety around schools,” the spokesperson said.
Last week the Independent revealed that Geelong motorists were still thumbing their noses at school-zone limits despite warnings to slow down.
Police have nabbed 88 drivers speeding in the zones since the start of the school year.
Police pointed their finger at parents rushing between schools while ferrying children.
