Six months’ jail for meth dealer

A MAGISTRATE has handed a six-month prison sentence to a Corio methylamphetamine trafficker.
Christopher Chambers, 23, of Moreland Ave, Corio, pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates’ Court this week to trafficking and using methylamphetamine, handling stolen goods and possessing ammunition.
Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable David Vanderpol said officers searched Chambers’ residence after September’s Operation Railbird identified phone calls and text messages between him and a neighbour.
Travis Kelly was arrested on October 1 with one ounce of methylamphetamines.
“Police located inside a … safe one set of micro scales, zip lock bags, drug-related notes and two glass smoking pipes.
Drug-related papers and notes referring “overtly to drug trafficking” were found in drawers, Snr Const Vanderpol said.
Police arrested Chambers after also finding a stolen Yamaha R1 motorbike and a shotgun shell and cartridge.
“The accused admitted to using methylamphetamines three to four days ago but denied theft of the motorbike, saying it was wheeled over by someone,” Snr Const Vanderpol said.
Notes relating to Chambers’ outstanding rent payments showed he faced “financial hardship”, the court heard.
Defence lawyer Duncan Ferguson said Chambers “went straight to ice” to deal with “serious depression” after both parents’ suicides.
Magistrate Michael Coghlan was unsatisfied Chambers would rehabilitate himself, imposing a six-month prison sentence.
He postponed a bail application until after the Independent went to press.
