Longer lifeguard hours for Eastern Beach

City of Greater Geelong has extended lifeguard hours at Geelong’s most popular beach for a second time.

In late October the City announced longer lifeguard hours for the Eastern Beach precinct for November through February, but those hours have been extended even further thanks to additional funding from the Victorian government.

From Monday 22 December to Saturday 28 February daily patrols will begin an hour earlier than previously announced, from 10am to 7pm.

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the City was thrilled to offer extended lifeguard coverage at Eastern Beach, which welcomes more than 250,000 visitors each summer.

“Safety is our top priority and this change means swimmers can enjoy the water with confidence every day of the week,” he said.

“With extra support from the Victorian government and Life Saving Victoria, we’ve been able to start weekday patrols earlier than planned.

“This is great news for swimmers, given the precinct is identified as a high-risk area and drowning blackspot.”

Councillor Eddy Kontelj said residents and visitors could enjoy Eastern Beach knowing lifeguards were looking out for them.

“Our lifeguards are committed to keeping the community safe and this extension allows us to provide even greater protection during the busy lead-up to Christmas,” he said.

“We also encourage everyone who visits our region’s beaches to swim between the flags for a safe and enjoyable experience.”
