New surroundings for Christmas scene

Geelong’s traditional nativity scene is now on display at its new location.

The scene, last year situated at the Wurriki Nyal civic precinct, is now nestled within the leafy environs of the Geelong Botanic Gardens,

Located near the gardens’ Conservatory, the temporary fixture is part of the Christmas in Geelong program, offering a peaceful place to reflect on what 25 December is all about.

The installation depicts the birth of baby Jesus, featuring Mary, Joseph, the Three Wise Men, a shepherd and animals.

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the nativity scene was significant for many local residents.

“For those of us who observe Christmas as a religious occasion, the nativity scene symbolises peace, love, joy and hope,” he said.

“The gardens provides a respectful and welcoming space for reflection among nature in the heart of Geelong.”

The new location offers residents greater opportunity to access the scene, having been at Wurridki Nyal and Johnstone Park in recent years.

Mayor Kontelj said the Christmas in Geelong program offered a variety of ways to mark the festive season.

“One of the beautiful things about being part of a vibrant and diverse multicultural community is the many ways we celebrate,” he said.

“We’ve proudly embraced tradition, culture and connection in our program for all to enjoy.”

The nativity scene is available for viewing from 8am to 7pm daily until 7 January 2026.
