Geelong’s council-run indoor leisure centres will re-open on July 1, City Hall has announced.
The gyms will resume operating under strict physical-distancing requirements and state-wide COVID-19 directions, according to City Hall.
These include a maximum of 20 in a gym space at once, 10 people per group class and limits of 45 minutes for gym sessions.
Employees completed specific training to comply with the measures, City Hall said.
“The re-opening of our leisure centre network is great news for the health and well-being of our community,” Geelong Mayor Stephanie Asher said.
“Our leisure facilities provide valuable activities and programs for all ages and are also important social hubs.”
The reopening follows the resumption of lap swimming at council-run pools on June 5.
Leisurelink, Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre, Waterworld and Splashdown will operate to their regular hours, according to City Hall.
Council sport and recreation portfolio chair Ron Nelson welcomed the reopening.
“In the challenging times we’ve been facing, it’s more important than ever that we look after our wellbeing,” Cr Nelson said.
“Exercise plays an important role in both our physical and mental health.
“The city team has prepared detailed physical distancing plans to ensure gym users can safely resume their workouts.
“Re-opening our gyms also allows a range of employees to come back to their regular roles.”
All council swim, sport and leisure memberships remain on hold with patrons needing to pay as they go for entry.
Booking is essential and available online at www.geelongaustralia.com.au/ssl or by phoning a preferred centre.
