Mt Duneed gets new community centre

Mt Duneed’s community shed has officially opened with tenants excited to finally have state of the art facilities.

Mt Duneed Men’s Shed group and the broader community is set to benefit

Tenants of the facility, Mt Duneed Men’s Shed (formerly Grovedale Men’s Shed), are one of 14 groups operating in the region, providing the opportunity for members, many of them older and retired, to remain active and connected.

The group has been meeting in temporary sites in recent years, most recently at Foundation 61 in Mt Duneed.

While the Men’s Shed will manage the facility, it will aim to engage other community groups by hiring out the space on a regular basis.

There is no barrier to who can use the facility, to maximise the value of the venue to the community.

Kardinia Ward councillors Ron Nelson and Bruce Harwood officially opened the newly constructed community facility on Sunday.

Mayor Peter Murrihy said the community shed was an investment designed to cater for the continued growth in the area.

“It’s terrific to see this facility completed with the Council contributing $645,000 toward the project,” Mayor Murrihy said.

“The Mt Duneed Community Shed will not only provide a home for the Men’s Shed, it will also allow for the group to continue to flourish, providing new and current members with the opportunity to stay active and involved.

“The multipurpose creative space will ensure the facility is appealing to the broader community, along with providing for artistic residents from around the region.”

Mt Duneed Men’s Shed provided an internal fit-out of the building thanks to an $80,000 Victorian government grant awarded in late 2021.
