Fight the chill, safely

Emergency services are urging everyone to learn how to protect themselves against burns as temperatures continue to chill Barwon South West residents to the bone.

Ambulance Victoria (AV) has shared ways to help educate the community about burn prevention and correct treatments as people seek ways to warm up this winter.

AV Barwon South West Regional and Clinical Operations acting director Stuart Reid said all burns could be serious, so knowing how to treat them properly was important.

“When the temperature drops, we often reach for products to help ease the cold, whether that be warm food or drink, heaters, hot water bottles or heat packs,” he said.

“There are a few simple steps that can significantly reduce the risk of burn injuries in high-risk places such as kitchens, bathrooms, around heaters and campsites.”

Burn prevention tips include supervising children in the kitchen and keeping hot items out of reach, remaining vigilant around open flames, using water to extinguish campfires, and putting safety guards around fireplaces.

Treatment for burn injuries should begin with holding the burnt area under cool running water for 20 minutes, and any clothing or jewellery that is not stuck to the burn should be removed.

The Victorian Virtual Emergency Department is available 24/7 through a video link for minor burns, but people are advised to call Triple Zero (000) for serious burns or emergencies.
