Clear for ears

Six facts about ear wax.

1. Do I need to clean my ears?
Normal healthy ears contain ear wax. Wax is not dirty.
Ears are self-cleaning for many people, so you only need to clean the outside part, with a tissue or cloth. Some people block up regularly and need the ear wax professionally removed.

2. What’s new in ear care?
Micro-suction ear cleaning! With a clinic on Pako, Newtown. Why? People love it, because there is no need to syringe water into the ear, it is gentle, and works really well to get the wax out.
The ear wax is gently sucked out with a suction cleaner and wax scoops.
It needs to be done by health practitioners specialising in this technique so you know your ears are in safe hands.
Objects stuck in the ear can be removed and swimmers’ ear infections treated.

3. Why do we have earwax?
It helps to keep ears healthy. It has lysozymes, which fight bacteria, and wax traps dust or dirt, pushing it out of the ear.

4. How do I know if my ears are blocked?
Sometimes you don’t know. You may have poor hearing, a horrible blocked ear feeling, itching, pain or ringing noises.

5. Can I use cotton buds?
No, not a good idea. Ear canals are usually quite narrow, and you may push the wax deeper in against the eardrum.

6. Does ear candling work?
No, not to remove ear wax. People think it does, because they see the ‘earwax’ in the burnt out candle afterwards.
That stuff is actually left-over candle wax. Scientists have analysed it.
