Election year hope for Geelong delegation

DELEGATED: Mayor Darryn Lyons implores Education Minister Christopher Pyne for action in Canberra this week, to the amusement of Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson and delegation members.

A Geelong delegation leaves for Canberra tomorrow hoping to leverage an election year into more for the region.
The G21 Geelong Region Alliance delegation will meet with government ministers and opposition leader Bill Shorten.
G21 CEO Elaine Carbines said the delegation would deliver messages to key politicians and advisers about the challenges faced by the region and its new opportunities.
“With a federal election this year, now is the time to be telling our politicians of the projects that we identify as the most important to our future economic and social wellbeing,” Ms Carbines said.
“When election promises are being made over coming months we want politicians to have the G21 region’s specific priorities front-of-mind.
“The annual delegation is part of a long-term strategy to reinforce the merits and the importance of key projects with our political decision makers.
“The timing of this delegation is especially relevant given the recent ministerial reshuffle, meaning there are new ministers in key portfolios of interest to this region.”
Priority projects include the revitalisation of the central Geelong, the Land 400 defence project, improved road access to Melbourne, a faster NBN rollout, support for the growth of Avalon Airport and addressing disadvantage.
The 15-strong delegation includes mayors, councillors and CEOs of the region’s five councils and G21 board members.
