TALK THE TOLL DOWN: Shock tragedy in NT

BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
THE DRIVER in a crash that killed a 24-year-old Geelong woman apparently committed suicide as a result, according to Northern Territory police.
Kirsty Robinson was working as a jillaroo on Northern Territory cattle station Killarney with the 24 year-old French national before the accident on October 14.
Family and friends mourned Ms Robinson during her funeral at Waterfront Christian Church this week.
A Northern Territory police spokesperson said initial investigations suggested the Land Cruiser utility was driving on an unsealed access road when the driver lost control on a bend.
“The driver has tried to correct the vehicle but overcorrected it, causing the vehicle to roll numerous times before coming to a rest on all four wheels.”
Police believed speed and the road condition contributed to the cause of the crash.
“The male driver was found dead in the vicinity of the crash but his death is not believed to have occurred as a result of the crash,” police said.
Ms Robinson is survived by parents Harry and Cathy and siblings Gerard, Lenore and Sonia.
Death notices characterised the former Covenant College student as vivacious, playful, generous and ready to tackle a challenge.
Former employer Lynne Meek, of Moorabool Valley Chocolate, said Ms Robinson had an adventurous streak.
“Kirsty embraced life to the full. She was always bouncy and bubby and enthusiastic, always wanting to try new things,” Ms Meek said.
“She had worked in hospitality for some time when the outback called. She liked camping and fishing and owned a horse.
“She went in May and spent some time on a property in Queensland and had only just moved to Killarney. The last contact I had was on Facebook and she said she really loved it.”
Ms Meek said Ms Robinson’s death was “the last thing anyone expected”.
Killarney station is in the Victoria River district, about 250 kilometres south of Darwin. The deaths did not contribute to the Territory road toll because they were on private property.
