ERIN PEARSON
HE started on a mission to bond parents and children through music.
Now Jamie Saxe has caught the entertainment bug.
Saxe said his six-piece, The Mighty Buzzniks, embodied what a Dr Seuss rock band would look like.
Saxe said the band wanted to bridge the gap between pre-school and “pre-packaged teen pop”.
“When you become parents you see there’s lots of music for really little kids but from four to 10 years of age they have to go up to teenage music but that music isn’t really appropriate,” he said.
“So I started writing songs where I could utilise lots of different genres and styles to create stories and lyrics that relate to children.
“I soon realised that playing live in front of children is really fun to do.”
The Mighty Buzzniks has written soundtracks for children’s television programs and performed around Australia at events like Warrnamboool’s Fun4Kids, and Federation Square New Year’s Eve party.
Saxe said the group’s latest album, Bug Out, offered songs about sports and bullying.
Giant talking chickens and tree-hugging robots were among the odd-ball characters that inspired the songs’ “bum-shaking fun”, he said.
“On the ground there’s a huge desire for something new, energetic and sophisticated, without the cheese.
“This is the force that drives us to mix modern sounds with themes and words that are relevant to kids’ lives.”
The Mighty Buzzniks will perform in Geelong as part of a Family Fun Day at Drysdale this weekend.
Venue Manager Rob Macleod said the day would also feature a range of free, healthy, arts-inspired activities for children and families.
The Mighty Buzzniks will perform at The Potato Shed on Sunday.
