A $10,000 State Government grant has boosted restoration work on Geelong West’s Soldiers Memorial Plinth.
The project will reinstate the memorial’s step in keeping with its 1925 design as part of a City of Greater Geelong forecourt rebuilding project.
Veterans Affairs Minister Hugh Delahunty announced the funding among more than $170,000 in grants for restoring war memorials and honour boards.
Mr Delahunty said the money would help communities repair, protect, restore and enhance their memorials.
“Our war memorials capture an important part of our nation’s war history and help ensure that communities remember the service and sacrifice of our veterans,” he said.
“At times of commemoration, such as Anzac Day, they’re important gathering places for friends, families and the wider community to honour our veterans and to reflect on the impact of war.
“That’s why these grants are so important.
“They provide a timely boost for communities determined to keep the memories of their local veterans and their stories alive for future generations.”
