Plans to turn Queenscliff Pier into a fundraising restaurant for charities have won the backing of federal and state government, according to organisers.
Charity Restaurant federal Agriculture, Fishers and Forestry Minister Tony Burke and Victorian Premier John Brumby had supported the Australian-first concept as part of next year’s Queenscliff Seafood Feast and Seafood Show.
Mr Burke told the organisers the restaurant would be a “great opportunity” to sample the “strength and quality of Australian seafood”.
“And it raises invaluable funds and awareness for our charities.
“Congratulations on such a fine event.”
Mr Brumby said next year’s event would showcase the region’s seafood in a “beautiful location”.
Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville has also thrown her weight behind the restaurant.
Charity Restaurant will cover the pier with marquees to serve thousands of patrons at separate lunch and dinner sittings in six days of fundraising beginning Good Friday.
Each 300-head sitting will donate proceeds to a worthy cause, including hospitals in Geelong and Melbourne.
The Independent will host the April 7 dinner, with its donation set for children’s charity Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia.
Independent managing editor Tony Galpin said the paper was thrilled to host a Charity Restaurant night.
“This will be the first time in Australia such an event has been held over the water,” he said.
“I encourage supporters of the Starlight foundation to join us for this unique, exciting fundraising experience.”
Tax-deductible tickets for the Independent’s night or other Charity Restaurant sittings are available at www.charityrestaurant.com.au.
