‘Suspicious’ overnight fire in Geelong West

Geelong West residents have escaped their home without injury after it was damaged in a “suspicious” overnight fire.

Country Fire Authority (CFA) crews were called to the house fire on Clarence Street on Sunday, May 5, at 10.39pm.

A CFA spokesperson said it had five vehicles on scene during the incident and was supported by Fire Rescue Victoria crews.

“On arrival firefighters found a single storey weatherboard house well alight,” they said.

“The fire was brought under control at 11.17pm and declared safe at 11.37pm.”

A Victoria Police spokesperson said Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives were investigating the cause of the fire.

“The occupant of the property was inside at the time however they escaped without injury,” they said.

“A crime scene guard is currently in place and the circumstance of the fire is being treated as suspicious.”
