A warning of a terrorist attack on Avalon Airport was a hoax, according to police.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said investigators established that Avalon faced “no genuine threat” about 2pm Wednesday after officers earlier locked down the airport.
Victoria and federal police rushed to Avalon and Tullamarine airports after receiving information about a potential attack around 9am.
“There is no credible information to suggest there was any strength behind the threat made at this stage,” the police spokeperson said.
The warning said extremists planned to attack “airliners parked, taxiing or on take off” at both airports.
The warning was in an email to various Melbourne news outlets.
An Avalon Airport spokesperson said flights continued on time despite the threat.
