Our flood of goodwill

GEELONG music fans will have the chance to experience some of the city’s top music acts while raising money for flood victims this weekend.
A group of the city’s music professionals banded together just days ago to raise money for the Queensland flood disaster, with the aim of raising $10,000.
Geelong’s Flood-Aid will feature performers and groups such as Johnny Hawkins, Tom Milek, Ben Dew, A Newborn Science, The Colour Clear, DJ Shaneus and Bodymachine DJs.
Spinning Half Studio front man Steven Nichols said an online conversation with like-minded music lovers sparked the initiative.
“I posted a comment on my Facebook page looking for ideas on how to raise money for the flood victims. From there we started fleshing out ideas and by the end of business two days later we had solo acoustic artists and DJs offering their support.”
Nichols his conversations about the Flood-Aid concept revealed how the floods had touched so many people across the Geelong region.
“It’s hard to ignore the death and missing toll in Queensland, so we’ve tried to pull out as many stops as possible as a show of support from a city in Victoria.”
Nichols said he was in awe of Geelong businesses who had offered gift packs and items for an auction during Flood-Aid.
“Local businesses have been throwing auction items at us, from a year’s supply of pizza from Dominos to golf bags from House of Golf, one-on-one pilates classes and Ghanda gift packs,” he said.
“We are so humbled.”
The Colour Clear’s Matt Biscombe said his band was excited to help.
“It’s hard to see so many people in Queensland struggling -they’re people just like you and me.”
Nicols said Flood-Aid promised an “eclectic mix of acoustic, rock, pop and alternative music” with various local DJs later in the evening.
“All artists performing at Flood-Aid have generously donated their time in a gesture they hope will inspire the Geelong community to come together and support the many people and animals suffering throughout Queensland,” he said.
Flood Aid will begin 2pm Sunday at Bended Elbow.
