Model rail enthusiasts on track to city

UNIQUE model train exhibits will arrive into Geelong full of steam for the weekend.
Accompanied by bells and whistles of an Aussie locomotive, 14 first-time train layouts will keep heads turning at a Geelong West monster model train exhibition.
Corio Model Railway Club’s Arthur Courtney said the high-quality designs would be the highlight for thousands of visiting steam enthusiasts expected to attend.
“There are a number of new layouts coming, ones that have never been exhibited in Geelong as well as groups of modellers showing how to build them and make these model scenes.”
Mr Courtney said detailed models had dropped in price from $1000 to as little as $300 since manufacturers moved several years ago from old-fashioned brass to quality plastics.
The savings had revitalised interest in model railways without compromising quality, he said.
“Now there are a lot of Australian companies making high-quality models, locomotives and rolling stock, even buildings and scenery,” Mr Courtney said.
The annual club exhibition will run on Saturday and Sunday at Geelong West Town Hall.
