Soccer ex-international seeks next Maradona here

Andrew Mathieson
A former star of European club soccer hopes a cutting-edge clinic program will unearth Geelong’s next round-ball superstar.
Vata Garcia, who was a hero in his homeland of Angola, wants to set new levels of coaching in Geelong to match the thousands of youngsters taking up the game during a boom period for the sport in the region.
“I have a passion for youth development,” Mr Garcia said.
“Once players are older, their habits are often too ingrained but by working with younger players I can use my experience to help them become better players.”
The 48-year-old has either coached or played in more than 25 countries.
He was working with giant European club Benfica before recently deciding to settle in Australia.
Garcia was appointed Geelong Soccer and Sports Club senior coach in November.
The announcement was one of the biggest signings in local soccer circles since former Scottish international Frank Munro agreed to coach Hamlyn Rangers.
Mr Garcia said his junior and youth Easter clinics would embrace more than just scoring goals.
“There is a lot of passion for soccer in Geelong,” he said.
“But, regardless of their (students’) ability, I know they will have fun and keeping active is a bonus.
“Of course, I’m always on the lookout for the next Maradona.
“Who knows? Maybe I’ll find them here.”
The clinic under Mr Garcia’s tutelage will cost $150.
Registrations are open through Geelong Soccer and Sports Club from Friday.
