Riding history’s wave

Torquay’s surf museum celebrated the 22nd anniversary of its opening earlier this month with a new name.
The Australian National Surfing Museum, as it is now known, celebrates the history of surfing in Australia.
The museum tells the story of this country’s rich beach culture and surfing heritage that has developed over the last one hundred years.
A visit to the ANSM gives people the opportunity to immerse themselves in the surfing culture and explore one of Australia’s favourite past times.
Through themed exhibition spaces and interactive displays, visitors can relive time spent at the beach, or discover the intimate link between surfers and breaking waves.
Find out about surfing heroes and legends in The Australian Surfing Hall Of Fame, which celebrates the lives of Australian surfing champions. You can check out their biographies mounted on a typical example of the board they rode.
Relax in the theatre and enjoy spectacular footage of surfers in action while surrounded by vintage surf memorabilia and an epic array of historic surfboards.
Trace the development of the surfboard along the boardwalk as a breaking wave looms overhead.
Explore the many elements that make up surf culture, clothes, movies, music, and walk through the ultimate surf mobile, the VW kombi van.
Whether you are eight or 88, at the ANSM Torquay you can stroll through a groundswell of history and discover how awesome and inspirational surfing can be.
The experience is set to get even better with a museum-wide lighting upgrade, new exhibition material and kid friendly interactive displays planned for the new year.
The museum is at 77 Beach Road, Torquay. It is open seven days a week. Closed Christmas Day.
