Doing their bit for the disadvantaged

Category: Corporate Social Responsibility
Winner: Geelong Mums

Geelong Mums is an innovative, volunteer-powered organisation that collects donated preloved nursery equipment and other children’s essentials then rehomes them to local families experiencing unthinkable disadvantage.
The organisation was founded in 2013 by five passionate local mums who recognised the need to support disadvantaged families from the resources of the more fortunate.
Geelong Mums quickly established itself as the only emergency relief organisation in the region, delivering a free co-ordinated material aid service, focusing on babies and children.
Working in partnership with 54 welfare, government and education organisations, Geelong Mums addresses the unmet need by providing help that is not delivered by traditional welfare services.
Utilising Geelong Mums is free of charge, adding substantial value to the organisations and families that receive items.
Cots, prams, car restraints, highchairs are safety checked to Australian standards, and clothing, linen, nappies, toys, feeding essentials are quality checked.
Geelong Mums takes care of practical and tangible needs of babies and children.
The work of Geelong Mums helps ensure that: caseworkers are freed to focus on their core role of providing support, care and referrals; families experiencing disadvantage receive quality equipment and consumables, alleviating
financial and emotional stress; and that the equipment provided is safe and reliable while saving Earth’s precious resources, too.
With three part-time staff and 450 volunteers, Geelong Mums is underpinned by a strong financial model, world-class systems, and passionate and skilled volunteers enabled by a generous community.
In 2017 Geelong Mums will help over 3500 children with over 10,000 essential items, free of charge and packed with love.
