‘Big bang’ bin fire scares residents

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS

A FIRE in an industrial skip bin in Norlane gave residents a fright on Sunday night and hospitalised a Geelong resident.
Corio fire-fighters, Police and Ambulance were called to the incident near the corner of Brooks and Lumeah streets in Norlane just after 7pm on Sunday 17 July.
A 50-year-old Geelong man was taken to hospital with superficial burns and was released from the hospital on Monday 18 July, and is assisting police with inquiries.
A local resident in the area, who requested to remain anonymous, told the Indy that he felt his house shook on Sunday night, and didn’t know what had happened.
“There was a big bang and the house shook a fraction,” he said.
“It really felt like someone had banged into the house.”
Many residents reportedly left their houses after hearing the explosion and went to investigate the cause in their pyjamas.
Detective Mark Thomas from Geelong CIU said the cause of the fire was yet to be determined.
“The arson chemist is undertaking an examination at scene to determine the cause of the fire, but at this stage there appears to be no evidence of explosives,” he said.
“The contents of the bin was strewn across the nature strip and the front of house but no one else was injured.”
Station Officer at Corio Fire Station Scott Ednumds-Wilson said residents had nothing to be concerned about.
“It’s nothing of concern for local residents; it was just a bin fire.”
Police are asking anyone with information about the fire to contact Geelong CIU or Crimestoppers.
