Lead alarm

People “don’t need to worry” if they used any of the 30 Geelong drinking fountains now closed after tests detected water lead levels above health guidelines, according to City Hall.

The guidelines were “very conservative” and public fountains were not “the main source of drinking water”, City Hall said while announcing that further testing was underway.

‘Robber’ remanded

A Winchelsea man was on bail when he held up central Geelong’s Bendigo Bank with a knife last Friday, a magistrate has heard.

The 55-year-old was remanded to reappear in court on 3 August over attempted charges covering armed robbery, assault and committing offences while on bail.

Behaviour ‘improves’

“Roaming” children have returned to school after a crackdown on antisocial behaviour around Lara’s skate park and shopping centre, according to police social media.

Fifty-two offenders including burglars and car thieves “came under attention” during the operation, which traders credited with a change in “attitude” around the area, police posted this week.

Badminton coup

Disabled athletes will play the world’s fastest racquet sport when Geelong hosts international badminton championships later this year, organisers have announced.

More than 150 competitors would attend the Australian Para-Badminton International and Oceania Para-Badminton Championships in November after Geelong secured rights to host the 2018 tournament, the organisers said.

Men arrested

Police have arrested two men who ran from a crashed car after a chase from North Geelong to Newtown.

Police alleged the car reached speeds up to 120km before hitting a tree after the men, aged 18 and 20, failed to stop for a routine check at a 7-Eleven around 3.15am Thursday.

Turbine deal

Geelong researchers will work on making wind turbines stronger using high-tech materials in a partnership with “wind energy solution provider” Vestas, Deakin University has announced.

Deakin’s Carbon Nexus institute would work with the company on boosting the compressive strength of materials used in wind turbines after the signing of an agreement between Vestas and the university on Thursday, Deakin said.

IDAHOBIT celebrated

Barwon Health has hosted an IDAHOBIT Day “celebration” with Victoria’s Commissioner for Sexuality and Gender Equality as guest speaker.

Thursday’s “sold-out” event featured Ro Allen as Barwon Health marked 28 years since the World Health Organisation declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder.
