Torquay have again proved to be the goal-kicking kings of the Bellarine league.
The club has now recorded all three highest senior scores in BFL history, according to Football Geelong statistics.
The hungry Tigers kicked 49.24 (318) in a remarkable 280-point victory over New-comb Power last weekend.
Torquay’s reserves also got in the act with 34.29 (233). They won by 229 points.
Despite the lopsided results, the seniors were unable to better its previous two marks.
In 1986, Torquay recorded a mammoth 57.32 (374) over a hapless St Leonards, who kicked just four straight goals.
The previous year, they booted what was the league’s highest score with 55.25 (355) in another 337-point demolition, again over St Leonards.
Torquay coach Luke Rayner was astounded with the weekend’s result.
“It was a mighty big score – certainly the highest I’ve seen,” Rayner said.
“A few supporters were hoping for the 50th goal, but we just didn’t get there.”
Despite the enormity of the win, club president Peter Papworth put the celebrations on ice and dismissed its significance.
“I don’t rate it at all,” Papworth said.
“It doesn’t mean anything – (Newcomb) have got a lack of depth in players and had so many players leave the club.
“But we never expected that kind of score.”
