Geelong has missed out on one of the founding women’s football team licences, AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick has announced.
Geelong had high hopes for its submission – one of 13 clubs pushing for a licence. Other unsuccessful bidders were West Coast, North Melbourne, St Kilda and Richmond. However, the five unsuccessful bidders have been granted provisional licences, and may be included in any expanded league in 2018, the AFL said. The eight successful teams were Adelaide, Brisbane Lions, Carlton, Collingwood, Fremantle, Greater Western Sydney, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs. The yet-to-be named competition will be played in February/March next year.
