Fine time for fish

Persistent wind disappointed many anglers after a long-awaited forecast for fine weather last weekend.
Desperate for a fish on Sunday, Fishing World’s Reece Pitt tried the Alcoa pier from his kayak with soft plastics. With plenty of fish showing on his sounder, his maiden cast caught a 40cm pinkie, the first of about a dozen, before further success on similar-size trevally and a couple of flathead.
One if his colleagues, Kevin Hunter, fished the Wilson Spit area on Saturday when he battled wind against the tide. Kevin persisted for a catch of whiting to 38cm and a couple of pinkies around 1kg.
Kevin also managed a few nice whiting around Point Henry.
Adam Van Der Lught fished the grammar school lagoon from his kayak on Monday evening’s slack tide, catching pinkies to 40cm and a couple of flathead on soft plastics.
Local club members travelled to Portland for an annual ANSA Convention last weekend, with fantastic captures reported – especially Wayne Trewin who hooked a large thresher shark on 8kg line.
He caught the 60kg shark after a lengthy battle that also left him with four stitches from gaffing his leg instead of the thresher. An ANSA national record might be another consellation.
Allan Lench might also earn an ANSA record after winning an extended battle with a 12kg school shark on 2kg line.
Other notable captures were salmon to 3.5kg and whiting of 48cm.
Back home, kingfish continued keeping anglers occupied, with plenty being taken around Port Philip Heads as well as offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Corio Bay also hosted small numbers of kings around Point Henry.
Queenscliff Harbour produced silver trevally to 45cm on soft plastics, while anglers fishing the grass beds toward St Leonards caught whiting to 40cm on tenderized squid and pippies.
Swan Bay offered some shelter from the wind, allowing anglers to score mixed bags including plenty of pinkies to 45cm, gummy shark, whiting and trevally.
On the freshwater front, Lake Bullen Merri continued producing quality Chinook Salmon for anglers using pilchard fillets and glassies in berley trails comprising the bait used and tuna pellets. Some of the fish pushed 3.5kg and fought like demons.
Lake Purumbete also fished well, with anglers soaking mudeye around the edges catching brown trout to 2kg.
Wurdee Boluc Reservoir produced redfin and the odd trout on Fish Arrow soft plastics and Strike Pro Bob n Spoons.
