Police to blitz drivers’ after catching 5000 speeding

A POLICE blitz will target speeding and drink drivers across the region over the next three weeks, Geelong’s top traffic cop has warned.
Road Policing Officer Senior Sergeant Shane Coles said the blitz would comprise two separate police operations against dangerous driving.
Operations Aegis and Trojan would combat Geelong’s biggest road threats, he said.
“People are still doing stupid, careless things time and time again and they need to realise they must stop,” Snr Sgt Coles said.
“The statistics produced from operations over the past five months show we’ve caught over 5000 speeding drivers in the Geelong area.
“We must concentrate on Geelong’s speed, alcohol and driver behaviour and we’ll have every car on the road over that period to make sure that happens.”
Snr Sgt Coles said police were particularly committed to weeding out repeat drink drivers.
Operation Trojan would bring four booze buses to Geelong, he said.
“Although we’re seeing less drink drivers on our roads all up we’re repeatedly seeing drink drivers who have been caught before.”
The Geelong region has recorded eight road fatalities since January 1.
