Corio Waste in the fray

Corio Waste Management's Nathan, Ken, Mathew and Anthea Dickens are entering Geelong Business Excellence Awards for the first time.

Corio Waste Management is entering Geelong Business Excellence Awards for the first time after nominations from the Deakin University Diversity Field Officer and local job creation programs.
Chief executive officer Mathew Dickens is “looking forward to benchmarking ourselves against other businesses” in as many categories as possible.
“I think it would be easier to tell you what we haven’t nominated for,” he says. “We’re interested in measuring our performance and this process helps us do that.”
“And we thought we should enter because we believe that the achievements of our people deserve recognition and reward.”
Mathew hopes the business will be recognised for its work with G21’s GROW jobs creation program.
“We try to provide opportunities for people from targeted areas in G21 region,” he says. “We want to make a difference.”
Corio Waste Management is investing in ways to be more environmentally friendly, with technology to reduce diesel consumption.
“We’ve also invested heavily in new technology to improve driver comfort, safety and well-being,” Matthew says.
In an industry first the company charges customers using actual weight data, not volume, which Mathew says creates clearer and more transparent price signals and can help customers improve their recycling efforts.
“We’ve invested a couple hundred thousand dollars in weighing systems for our trucks.”
Corio Waste Management has collected, treated and disposed of waste for a vast range of local government and business clients for more than 20 years.
The business employs more than 60 people, has a fleet of 50 vehicles and performs 10,000 waste and recycling collections each week.
