GEELONG Greyhound Racing Club has set a date for the opening night of its $8 million redevelopment at Corio’s Beckley Park.
The club said it would join with Greyhound Racing Victoria for the official opening night of racing on the new track on March 18.
The “unique” redesign features two tracks, one similar to Sandown Park’s circuit and the other like Warragul’s “highly regarded” track, the club said.
The design would allow greyhounds to race over five distances.
Geelong club chairman Maurie Blair said excitement was building over the opening night.
“All at Geelong are in a state of excited anticipation and can’t wait for the facility to reach completion, as it not only provides world class racing facilities for the greyhound industry but also a magnificent entertainment complex for the citizens of greater Geelong,” Blair said.
The redeveloped facility would host a handful of lead-up daytime race meetings prior to opening night, with the club yet to determine dates.
March 18 would be the club’s first race meeting in its “prime weekly Friday night timeslot”, the club said.
