Gun charges for Corio man

A Corio man whose home was the scene of a near-fatal shooting this week has appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court on firearm charges.
Police charged Douglas Raymond Dannantt, 51, of Fairbairn Drive, on Wednesday with five counts of possessing prohibited firearms and ammunition without a licence after finding shotguns and rifles at his house.
Rob Daly, acting for Dannett, said his client had “custodial management issues” and was at risk of harming himself.
Magistrate Terry Wilson remanded Dannett in custody to reappear in Geelong Magistrate’s Court on November 14.
Dannett told newspapers earlier this week how he was hiding in his house when a 35-year-old man was shot outside in the head on Monday night.
Dannatt told police the victim was shot after he and partner Sharon barricaded themselves in their bedroom while up to four men tried to break into the house.
Dannatt said he believed the men were trying to smash the patio window with a rifle butt when the man was shot.
The shooting was the fourth at the house in the past two years.
Dannatt said people were “constantly” hassling for cash after he previously complied with demands to hand over money.
Police said the shooting victim was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition with “upper body wounds”.
He was later listed in a serious but stable condition.
“It appears a man went to the house in Fairbairn Drive and as a result of an incident was shot,” the spokesperson said.
Detectives investigating the incident ruled out a link with the fatal shooting of Torquay bikie Ross Brand at a Bandidos gang clubhouse in Breakwater less than a fortnight earlier.
Hundreds of gang members gathered in Geelong for his funeral and wake last Friday.
