Volunteers with mussel needed

By Jena Marino

Portarlington Mussel Festival needs people power to ensure its weekend event goes off without a hitch.

Festival committee secretary Glen Jose said that the festival could not operate without volunteer support.

He said the team was short of 40 volunteers from its normal complement of 120.

“It’s the difference between a hard day to the volunteers and a relaxing and enjoyable day,” Mr Jose said.

Mr Jose said the festival would not be cancelled if it ran short of volunteers.

“The work is not easy and more volunteers would reinforce team work and make the day enjoyable.”

Mr Jose said money raised from the festival was used directly by the community.

Last year local football and cricket clubs received new electronic scoreboards and the local CFA brigade received a new lightweight vehicle.

The festival was established in 2007 to promote the Portarlington mussel industry. It attracts around 30,000 people each year.

Potential volunteers can phone 0411 036 939 to register for the event.
