Time to talk with kids

“HOW do I talk to my parents about this?” is just one common question asked by youth seeking support from Espod Geelong Inc.
Meanwhile, parents often ask “Is my child’s behaviour normal?”
That’s why Espod Geelong is hosting the upcoming seminar “Talking With Young People About…” which will cover topics of adolescent development.
Program manager Kate Tuohey said the team at Espod have invited four independent guest speakers to the event.
“Many parents feel they are not equipped to have these sorts of conversations,” Kate said.
“We want to help people understand how to talk with young people, not to young people.”
Kate said talking about these issues relates to “protection and prevention”.
“Not having these types of conversations exposes young people to risk,” she said.
But Espod Geelong believes the seminar extends beyond its application to parents and their teenagers.
“It also applies to health workers and people of all ages,” Kate said.
“People will be more informed about what’s normal and expected behaviour of young people. They will also learn what services they can access to help support their young person.”
Renowned guest speaker Les Twentyman will speak about substance use.
“It’s a key topic because we are talking about the ice epidemic in Geelong,” Kate said.

The event will be held from 10am to 4pm at The National Wool Museum, 26 Moorabool Street, Geelong on Sunday 15 November.
