Council needs young blood – candidate

A DEAKIN law student has put himself forward to contest the by-election for the council vacancy caused by the resignation of Cr Stretch Kontelj.
Newtown’s Trent Sullivan, 23, who works part-time in real estate, said he would nominate for the Kildare ward by-election on 17 October.
Nomination for the by-election close at midday on 15 September and ballot packs will be mailed out to voters between 29 September and 1 October, to be returned by 6pm on 16 October.
Mr Sullivan said he was inspired by Cr Kontelj’s “long history of community service and our new Mayor Darryn Lyon’s energetic leadership”.
He said he wanted to present himself as a candidate as part of “a new generation of community leaders”.
“I believe it’s time for change. This council needs new blood and a voice for the future. I believe I can provide fresh insight and perspective to the workings of council.
“Since leaving school I have also worked in the mining industry in Western Australia and in the hospitality industry and I understand how important jobs are to grow our city.
“Over the years my parents have always operated small businesses and I grew up appreciating the challenges facing small business and the hard work required to stimulate growth.
“The rejuvenation of the CBD is vital and to achieve that we need to see changes to car parking and improvement to bus routes.”
Mr Sullivan said a convention and exhibition centre was needed to enhance Geelong’s reputation as “an events and festival capital of Australia”.
“Geelong has incredible potential and some exciting changes have already begun to happen under this Mayor’s leadership.
“I would be honoured if I were to be part of that team entrusted to take this city forward.”
