GEELONG Football Club has ruled out disciplinary action against Cameron Mooney despite the dual premiership forward losing his licence for six months.
Geelong Magistrate Stephen Myall suspended Mooney’s licence for six months on Wednesday and fined him $448 without conviction for driving 39km/h over the limit.
Geelong Football Club chief executive officer Brian Cook ruled out disciplinary action such as banning Mooney from playing in the senior side.
“There won’t be a ban. He’s been dealt with by the courts on this one, so we’ll leave it at that.”
The Cats have previously taken action against errant stars, including a ban on Steven Johnson from the senior side for six weeks after his arrest for public drunkenness in Wangaratta in 2006.
Mooney pleaded guilty to his speeding charge on Wednesday.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Geoff Lamb said officers caught Mooney driving at 119km/h in an 80km/h zone on Mount Duneed Road in January.
Snr Const Lamb said Mooney told police he was “daydreaming”.
Mooney’s lawyer, Mr Croucher, said his client initially contested the charge because he was “surprised” at his recorded speed.
Mr Croucher said Mooney had since had the matter adjourned twice to “make family arrangements for driving” and to move from his Point Cook home to Geelong.
Mooney now lived “within walking or push bike” distance from Skilled Stadium.
“(His family) uprooted themselves knowing he would be months off the road,” Mr Croucher said.
Magistrate Stephen Myall joked Mooney could “keep up his fitness” riding his bike to training.
Mooney smiled in court as Mr Myall handed down his decision.
