POLICE have charged a Lara man over an alleged car theft that ended with an officer shooting his girlfriend in the jaw.
Bradley Taylor, 26, will appear in Coffs Harbour Local Court on June 27.
A New South Wales hospital spokesperson said Georgina Kirby, 24, was in a serious but stable condition on Wednesday.
Police alleged Ms Kirby was with Mr Taylor in the stolen black Kia Sorento without number plates when police intercepted them at Coffs Harbour, on the state’s northern coast, on Tuesday.
Ms Kirby was in the driver’s seat when an officer’s gun shot her, police confirmed on Wednesday.
An air ambulance airlifted her to John Hunter Hospital, in Newcastle,
Police alleged Mr Taylor stole the vehicle from the back of a stationary car-carrier parked in a nearby street.
Police charged him with theft of a motor vehicle and theft and use of transportation without consent.
New South Wales police have launched an independnet investigation into the shooting of Ms Kirby.
State Police Inspector Mark Taylor said investigators were treating the incident as serious.
The two officers involved were receiving counselling and were undergoing interviews with investigators, he said.
