Dangers of cotton buds

“Delhi’s Street-corner ear-cleaners are bewailing the death of their profession as young people increasingly take to cotton buds. Muhammad Abbas, 38, whose family has been cleaning ears since the 1500s, says he struggles to clean more than 20 pairs of ears a day.” (The Age)
FACTS:
* Over 7000 people attend hospitals each year with injuries to their ear canals by using cotton buds.
* Most common problems associated with cotton buds are :
– Infection;
– Irritation to the canal; and
– Hearing loss associated with pushing wax down and blocking the eardrum.
Always remember:
You shouldn’t stick any object smaller than your elbow into your ear!
If your ears are blocked, see an ear nurse for gentle micro-suction ear cleaning.
