When Empowered Liveability first began, its founders shared a bold vision – to make home ownership a reality for people with disabilities.

What started as an ambitious dream has now become a movement changing lives across Australia.

In the early days, the path was anything but easy. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) was still an emerging concept, and few understood how it worked. The team behind Empowered Liveability spent countless hours knocking on the doors of lenders, only to hear the same answer: “It’s too risky, too new.”

But instead of giving up, they refined their models, developed new partnerships, and built evidence to show that SDA housing is not just about accessibility – it is about independence, security and long-term stability.

Through perseverance, innovation, and a deep understanding of the NDIS, the Empowered Liveability team is gradually turning scepticism into support.

The company is working tirelessly to educate financial institutions about the economic and social value of SDA home ownership, demonstrating that people with disabilities are not just tenants – they are capable, determined individuals who deserve the same opportunities to build equity and stability as anyone else.

Today, the results speak for themselves. Empowered Liveability’s home ownership arm, Empowered Housing, has guided multiple participants through the life-changing process of building and owning their own SDA homes – something that seemed impossible less than a decade ago.

Take Dyson, for example. After a spinal cord injury on the football field, he returned home to his family home, only to have to reside in the garage. Reliant on information from local generic builders, and uncertain of his housing future, Dyson connected with Nicole Doherty, CEO of Empowered Liveability, and was introduced to the Empowered Housing team.

He is now the proud owner of his own purpose-built SDA home. Every room reflects his independence – wide hallways, adaptive technology, and spaces designed specifically for his lifestyle such as a gaming room and outdoor barbecue kitchen. His story is a shining example of what happens when policy meets purpose.

Soon, Thai will join him in this growing group of Empowered homeowners. His build is currently underway, marking another milestone for Empowered Housing and a powerful symbol of progress for the entire SDA community.

While the journey has been marked by trial, error, and relentless perseverance, Empowered Liveability, through Empowered Housing’s success has redefined what is possible.

The company has proven that, with the right expertise and determination, people with disabilities can not only access quality housing, they can own it.

Empowered Housing continues to lead with innovation and heart, paving the way for a future where disability is not a barrier to independence, but a foundation for empowerment.
