There’s something profound about standing with your community, feet in the sand, as the sun rises over the ocean.
Add to that the sound of the didgeridoo, the scent of eucalyptus and cherry ballart smoke drifting through the air, and the deep cultural significance of being welcomed to Wadawurrung Country by a Wadawurrung person, and you have something truly special.
This year, Barwon Coast and Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation (WTOAC) are inviting the community to share in that moment. On Monday July 7 at 7.30am, as part of NAIDOC Week 2025, everyone is welcome to gather at the Barwon Heads end of Bukareeyoo (formerly 20W), Ocean Grove for a free, family-friendly sunrise celebration.
This event is more than a ceremony, it’s a chance to stand together, on Country, in celebration of the world’s oldest continuing living cultures.
It’s an opportunity for families, school children and locals to experience the beauty and strength of Wadawurrung culture through a Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony, and didgeridoo performance.
Importantly, it’s also a way to show up – as allies, neighbours and members of a shared community.
NAIDOC’s 2025 theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy, honours 50 years of NAIDOC Week and shines a light on the strength of young First Nations leaders who are shaping the future with pride and purpose. These themes are not just words; they are a call to action, a reminder that our presence and participation matter.
In a time when much of our connection is digital or distant, this gathering is a powerful invitation to be present – physically, emotionally and culturally. It’s a chance to listen, learn, and walk together in truth and respect. As the sky brightens and the first light stretches across the dunes, the act of standing together becomes a quiet but powerful gesture of support.
Held during the school holidays, on the first day of NAIDOC Week, this is a peaceful, respectful event for all ages. Children will have the chance to experience a rich and living culture first-hand, while parents and carers model the importance of respect, understanding, and allyship.
Wadawurrung Country is a place of deep cultural and environmental significance. Taking part in this sunrise celebration is one small way we can honour that legacy and commit to walking forward together.
