Golden Plains Shire will not have a deputy mayor for the next year after the council decided against the position.
Councillors voted not to elect a deputy mayor in the Golden Plains Shire for the next year during a November 20 meeting to encourage a more collaborative community and leadership approach.
Cr Owen Sharkey said eliminating the deputy mayor position would save money from allowances and administrative expenses, with funds directed to essential community services.
“This not only strengthens the cohesion within our group, but it also reflects a more inclusive form of governance,” he said.
“All councillors would have the opportunity to actively contribute to the decision-making process and foster a sense of shared responsibility.
“Eliminating a position perceived by many as a non-essential role demonstrates our commitment to a lean and effective local government.
“Many difficult financial decisions are ahead of us, many cuts may need to be made, and we should lead by example and show good leadership.”
Mayor Brett Cunningham was re-elected during the meeting and said the council would continue to “deliver sound financial management”.
“(I will) continue to implement a professional style of leadership that holds not only myself but fellow Councillors accountable for our actions and behaviours,” he said.
“This leadership pledge extends to our community and our Council organisation, where we will continue to assist with implementing a positive workplace environment.
“To the community, thank you for your continued support and I look forward to serving another term as Mayor of the Golden Plains Shire, working for you, representing and advocating on your behalf.”
