Geelong teens on the rise

Two young Geelong athletes are set to compete in the Australian Little Athletics Championships in Melbourne from April 21 to 23.

Cailin Walker and Leah Berry, both from Lara, will compete in the triple jump and 200 metres respectively.

Cailin competes for Geelong Little Athletics and Leah for Corio.

For 14-year-old Matthew Flinders Secondary College student Cailin, it’s been a quick rise in the triple jump since she began in primary school.

“In PE before the aths carnivals we always used to go and practice and I always used to jump further than the boys, which I quite liked,” she said.

“Then I started doing it at Little Aths and found it was something that I enjoyed.

“I’ve always been quite bouncy so that definitely helps.”

Cailin does callisthenics two nights a week, which she said helps her triple jump.

Cailin has improved by five metres since she first started and now jumps at 11 metres, which would put her in the top eight in the country for her age group.
