Geelong recorded two new COVID-19 cases yesterday bringing the city’s total active cases to 15, according to local health authorities.
“Both were known household contacts of a Grovedale case and in isolation during their infectious period,” Barwon South West Public Health Unit director Eugene Athan said.
“There are now 15 active COVID cases across seven households in the greater Geelong area.
“There are five COVID-positive patients in University Hospital Geelong in a stable condition. Three of these patients are in [intensive care].
“University Hospital Geelong is a COVID-streaming hospital for COVID-positive patients in our region and metropolitan Melbourne.”
Professor Athan also advised authorities had changed Coles in Waurn Ponds from a tier one exposure site to tier two for customers.
“Waurn Ponds Coles is a tier two exposure site for the general public,” he explained.
“The tier one grading released last night is for staff only and has been corrected.
“There are two staff members who have returned positive results, both reside in metro areas and their source of acquisition is still under investigation.
“No transmission has been identified between staff and customers at local supermarket exposure sites.”
Several other exposure sites had resulted from positive cases from outside of Geelong, Professor Athan added.
“Two metro-based Cotton On workers who have worked within a local Cotton On site have tested positive,” he said.
“This site is now a tier two [site], and investigations are continuing. Some individuals will be a tier one [contacts] however they will be notified directly.”
Demand for testing has ramped up with 4500 tests yesterday.
“We thank people for getting tested with any symptoms or attendance at the exposure sites,” Professor Athan said.
“Additional testing locations have been added and opening hours of existing sites hours have been extended to meet demand.”
