AFLW vice-captain agrees to another two years

Geelong AFLW vice-captain Meghan McDonald has agreed to a new two-year contract with the Cats.

“Being part of this team and this group is very exciting,” McDonald said on Tuesday.

“To explore this option to extend the contract was something I wanted to do and it’s exciting to get it finalised.”

The Cats defender was named an All-Australian and won the Geelong’s best and fairest in 2019, after the side reached a preliminary final in its debut season.

A finger injury saw her sidelined early in 2020 but she was back among the Cats’ best when she returned

McDonald is optimistic about the team’s prospects in coming years.

“It’s exciting to look forward to where we could be in two years’ time,” she said.

“We have a critical mass of players that are at the start of their careers. We have talent that will keep on improving.

“To be part of the group will be exciting and motivating. There is so much growth ahead for this team.”

The 29-year-old began her AFLW career with the Western Bulldogs before crossing to Geelong at the end of 2018.

She has played 16 AFLW games across three seasons and is set to again be an important part of the Cats line-up in 2021.
